A recent study suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing these drugs need to be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have stopped the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural management.
