At least thirteen passengers killed and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the national leader.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
